Midi-Pyrenees is the largest region of France with a wide variety of countryside, from
agricultural farmland to the snowy mountains of the Pyrennees. The Gers area is made up of
rolling hills and has many beautiful villages. The Haute Pyrennees is largely mountainous,
with many ski resorts. The Tarn and the west of the region contain a mixture of hills and
rocky gorges - perfect for hikers, canoeists and campers. The Tarn department has become
very popular with British buyers and prices have increased as a result.
Food highlights include cassoulet (a bean and meat stew/soup), and magret de canard
(duck), foie gras (a very rich goose pate) and Roquefort cheese. Apart from these
specialities the Midi Pyrenees reputedly enjoys the healthiest diet in the whole of
France.
The climate is extremely pleasant with the high temperatures of the summer often cooled by
a pleasant gentle breeze. The mountainous areas are considerably cooler and wetter.
The Tarn et Garonne Department is situated in the north-eastern corner of what was the old
Medieval province of Gascony, whose heart is in the neighbouring Gers Department.
The area known as Le Lomagne boasts the best all-year-round weather of the whole of
France, with hot, dazzling summers, warm, golden autumns, mild, gentle winters and warm
& verdant springs. The air is pure, the light luminous, & the sky at night a
wonder to behold. The Lomagne is a large area of beautiful, unspoilt rolling hill-country,
of undulating agricultural land studded with oak woodland. It is almost completely devoid
of traffic even in the height of the tourist season.
The region is
renowned for its farmhouse industry of goose & duck
rearing, primarily for the production of the famed fois gras
& other preserved poultry products known as confit. It is
also acclaimed for its harvest of superb white garlic, the
finest in France. Armagnac brandy is produced nearby in the
neighbouring Gers Department. Medieval towns with cobbled
streets, like Sarlat, Cahors and La Roque-Gageac are amongst
the most picturesque villages in France. Lourdes, near the
Spanish border is the principle place of pilgrimage in Europe.
Toulouse's most famous landmark is the multi-towered
Romanesque Basilica of St. Serinin, a Benedictine abbey built
in the 11th century to shelter pilgrims along the pilgrim
route to Spain. Next door in the Palace de la Berbie is the
Henri de Toulouse Lautrec museum, housing the world's largest
collection of his
work.
